Abstract: ICT (Information and Communication Technology) is an enabler for sustainable cities, improving management of resources, both reducing utilisation and improving efficiency; increasing the participation of citizens at public and social activities; strengthening the inclusion of individuals with better access to enriched services and life quality and enhanced health services; enabling innovation and supporting the movement towards a knowledge society. The authors of this work will concentrate in the building industry. For doing so, it will be important to consider not only new construction, that count only for 10 % of the total infrastructure, but also the existing buildings where serious improvements should be done. The authors will cover here the state of the art, rise the best practices, present the economic implications of different ICT investments and discuss a scenario of a sustainable future home.
